July 29, 2004— --As the U. S. Food and Drug Administration's first-ever drug to treat erectile dysfunction in women, a new study finds that a drug called sildenafil is a promising treatment option for women with low sexual desire.
The Food and Drug Administration announced yesterday that the drug, known generically as flibanserin, is being tested in more than 250,000 women with moderate to severe sexual dysfunction. Sildenafil, which is prescribed for treatment of high blood pressure and pulmonary arterial hypertension, is not approved for female use.
In addition to flibanserin, the study's authors say it is also being studied for other conditions: "The FDA has not yet approved flibanserin for women to treat pulmonary hypertension, as it is a newer and less costly indication for the treatment."
Sildenafil is the active ingredient in the brand name Viagra, marketed by Pfizer, a drug company that produces a generic version of Viagra.

The drugs are approved for the treatment of female sexual arousal disorders, including sexual dysfunction associated with the inability to achieve and maintain an erection adequate to sustain intercourse. Although the FDA approved flibanserin in the U. S., a second drug is already being studied in women with moderate to severe sexual dysfunction. Sildenafil is also being studied in women with moderate to severe sexual dysfunction.
The study, published in the journal "Journal of the American Medical Association" last June, is being carried out in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration. The results of the study were announced in conjunction with a meeting on women's sexual health and the use of drugs.

"The FDA is reviewing the results of the trial and, based on their analysis of the data, we are going to make sure it's safe for women to use," he said. "We are also looking into possible interactions with other medications and, based on their potential to increase the risk of adverse events in patients who are taking flibanserin, we are going to continue to evaluate the safety of flibanserin for patients who are taking other medications that may interact with it."
The drug is currently on the market, under the brand name Viagra, which is also a prescription medication.
